Why Do Dogs Sneeze When EXCITED?

2 mins read

A dog’s play sneeze can be just as adorable as a dog’s sneeze. A dog’s sneeze will often make their human laugh. This is a funny and hilarious thing, but it’s also quite curious. Dog sneezes may be common but they can also be very cute. Our canine companions close their eyes and sneeze. There are many reasons dogs sneeze. It could be for communication and play, or serious health reasons. This is not something to ignore.

What makes my dog sneeze so much when he’s excited?

Is your dog always sneezing out of excitement? It’s quite funny and you might be wondering why. It turns out that dogs can sneeze because of many reasons.

How do you get sneezes?

Sneezes occur involuntarily by the body in response to irritations in your nose. The brain has the “sneeze-center”, which controls all the muscles that produce a wheeze. Dogs, like humans, will close their eyes if they are sneezing. Not all dog sneezes, however, are real sneezes. A true sneeze originates from the respiratory tract. Play sneezes, however, are less common.

‘Happiness is the key to happiness

You got that right. Some dogs sneeze just because they are happy. It sounds strange to humans. Sneezing, in general, is not pleasant for humans. Different types of sneezes can be found in dogs. Dogs can sneeze in the same way that cats purr. Their happiness or contentment.

Invitation to

If your dog loves to play, the sneeze may be its way of saying “hey, let’s have some fun!” Excited dogs are more likely to play than those who are less energetic. If your dog sneezes, then grabs its favorite thing, you will know how to interpret their sneeze.

Calming

If your dog gets too excited, they might sneeze in an attempt to calm down. Dogs have more than 50 calming signals and gestures. It could be similar to taking deep breaths to relax.

Environment

Dogs can sneeze if they have inhaled something irritating. This is why dogs will sneeze after digging in the dirt and sticking their snouts into the grass.

Sometimes they might get irritated by perfumes, cleaners, and household products.

Communication

Dogs communicate with each other by using their sneezes. Sneezes may not be the only method of communicating with dogs.

A 2017 study showed that wild African dogs use their sneezes when negotiating. This helped to shape collective decision making.

Dogs often communicate through sneezes while playing together.

Sneezes are also used by dogs to indicate that they need to slow their pace, take a rest, or that they feel comfortable with what is happening.

Playfulness

Dogs often sneeze when they play with people or dogs. Dogs can use “play sneezing”, which is normal, to show they are having fun. Dogs will also use play-sneezing to indicate that their behavior is playful.

Dogs will also curl their lips as they play. This lip curl can cause dogs to have a wrinkled face that can cause them to sneeze. Playful sneezes are a quick snort, which comes from the nose and not the lung.

Attention

Dogs “fake” sneezing to get attention or express interest in playing.

You might suspect that your dog is fake-sneezing in order to get what they want.

Sensitive Senses Of Smell

Dogs possess a strong sense for smell. PBS interviewed scientists who estimated that dogs senses of smell are 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive to different smells than humans. Dogs’ adorable noses may be more sensitive than humans to certain irritants. They should be protected all the time. Dogs may sneeze out of excitement or play, for many different reasons. One reason dogs sneeze while playing is their tendency to curl their lips. The dog can then wrinkle their sensitive nostrils which can result in a tickle signaling the body to sneeze. A dog that sneezes is usually a sign of health and the body doing its job.
